Donations - The Campaign For Oconee Hill Cemetery
With the community’s support, Oconee Hill Cemetery has launched a campaign to restore Athens-Clarke County’s public cemetery. Oconee Hill Cemetery has raised $1.5 million of its campaign goal of $2.0 million for repairs and restoration under the leadership of honorary chair Terry Wingfield, Sr., chairs Buddy and Lucy Allen, and Tom Wilfong.
The public cemetery for Athens-Clarke County, Oconee Hill last year marked it's 160th anniversary. A recent comprehensive assessment concluded that many historic sections of Oconee Hill Cemetery could one day be beyond repair and lost forever. The assessment found some roads in disrepair, and many steps and walkways need attention. There is little water service, and several retaining walls are in great need of repair. In response, the campaign is raising funds to restore the deteriorating infrastructure of the cemetery.
Many neighbors and friends have already generously supported the campaign. Like you, they believe the past is worth preserving because of the strength it
gives to those of us in the present.
Today, you can join this movement to preserve our history by making a gift to the Campaign for Oconee Hill Cemetery. When you help achieve the campaign goal with a gift of $50, $100, or even $250, if you are able, repairs and restoration can begin to return the historic section of the cemetery to its former beauty. Gravestones will be repaired and fences around family plots will once again reflect the strength of each generation’s bond with one another.
And the size of the perpetual care trust fund will increase so that future generations will still be able to walk through Oconee Hill Cemetery – honored on our National Register of Historic Places -- and hear the stories of ancestors and former residents.
